Tiger Ryder Cup doubt as Woods refuses to say 'count me in' for Celtic Manor

Crunch talks: Woods is due to meet Corey Pavin next week to discuss his role

Tiger Woods has refused to confirm that he will be part of the American Ryder Cup team at Celtic Manor in October.

Asked on four separate occasions whether he would go to Wales as a wild card pick, he gave the same evasive answer every time: 'I'm planning on playing my way into the team.'

How hard would it have been to say: count me in? Too hard for Woods, clearly, who is outside the automatic places with just two weeks of qualifying left.

Woods is due to meet captain Corey Pavin at the US PGA Championship in Milwaukee next week and there are many in America who believe the skipper has some pursuading to do if Woods doesn't play his way in.

Eye off the ball: Woods has often appeared to play below his best in previous Ryder Cups

Pavin will be keeping his fingers crossed, therefore, that the real Woods shows up at the Bridgestone Invitational this week - an event he has won on no less than seven occasions. Another victory at Firestone and he will lock up his place in Pavin's team.

It's not the only thing at stake for Woods this week, for two players have the chance to end his five year reign as the world No 1- fellow American Phil Mickelson and Englishman Lee Westwood.

The latter will partner Woods for the first two rounds and Tiger paid him a glowing tribute. 'We all knew Westy had a rare talent and over the past two years, he's shown it,' he said.
