Iron man: Andy Murray pictured in the weight room of his Surrey mansion for American Vogue's September issue

Chiselled and bronzed, mean and moody, he responds to the camera like a master model.

It's hard to recognise Andy Murray from the skinny, awkward figure he cut in his teens.

The 6ft in British number 1 was photographed by Mario Testino for the fashion bible American Vogue wearing a weighted vest that he uses for training, and a pair of low-slung jeans.

Murray, 23, has worked hard to bulk up his lanky frame as this picture, taken in the garage of his £5million home in Surrey, shows.

And he seemed happy with the results yesterday in an update to his followers on the Twitter website. 'Just seen the new American Vogue which I'm in!' he wrote. 'Shoot was good fun. What do you reckon?!'

Murray did the photo shoot for the September edition of American Vogue which was accompanied by an interview with the tennis champion.

The name's Murray, Andy Murray: The tennis star teams his tuxedo with trainers as he poses for Testino

And he was shot by acclaimed photographer Mario Testino in his garage, which doubles up as his weight room with barbells and racks of free weights.

And Testino was so struck by the daily/hourly grind of relentless practice that is all-consuming for top athletes that he decided to take the pictures 'in here. Where he works.'

Murray then dons a tuxedo - and had Testino tie the bow tie for him because he had 'no idea how' - which he teams with a pair of white trainers.

He told Vogue journalist Vicki Woods that he doesn't own a tuxedo and is more of a 'shorts-and-T-shirts guy - I spend all my life in them because of playing'.

But he added: 'The stuff was really nice. Really, really nice.'

Burberry's Christopher Bailey, who designed the tuxedo, said Murray is going to be anan iconic British tennis player.

He said: 'He’s so focused and so driven in his craft. He’s laser sharp: a wonderful person for the nation to celebrate.'

Murray, who last weekend beat Roger Federer in the final of the Rogers Cup in Toronto, also talks to Vogue about his family, his girlfriend Kim Sears who lives with him in his Surrey mansion and being drug tested.

He said: 'I have to update where I’ll be, and give them an hour, even if it’s in the BA lounge at Heathrow. All the countries have their own testers, but I get tested a lot because I live close to London and I have an apartment in Miami, and those places have lots of testers.'

And he said the testing can come randomly, without any warning and said the worst timing was back in May on the night of the General Election.

He said it was the first time he had been able to vote and was planning a night in front of the TV.

But, he explained: 'One of the drug testers turned up to give me a random competition drug test, and this is like 9:30, and I was just like eaaarghhhh!
'And you spend the next 45 minutes instead of watching it, having someone ask you basically to put your trousers to your knees so that they can watch you and make sure it’s you that’s doing it.

'One of the most uncomfortable experiences you can have. It’s horrible.'
