Newcastle became the third Barclays Premier League team to hit the opposition for six this weekend.

After Arsenal and Chelsea went goal crazy on Saturday, Newcastle got in on the act 24 hours later as Andy Carroll scored a hat-trick to sink desperate Aston Villa.

It came on the day Manchester United were held 2-2 at Fulham, as Sir Alex Ferguson hit out at his team for missing a penalty that would have made it 3-1.

Nani's kick was saved by David Stockdale and Fergie - who once again refused to speak to the BBC - said: 'Ryan Giggs should have taken it. In the last game we played against Tottenham at home Ryan scored two penalty kicks and Nani was on the pitch the same day. To miss a penalty to make it 3-1, you're throwing two points away. But I thought Fulham deserved a point.'

Paul Scholes scored his 150th goal for United after 10 minutes but Simon Davies drew Fulham level.

Ferguson added: 'Once again it was an outstanding performance from Scholes. It's just disappointing we didn't ram home the advantage.'

The visitors took the lead again through a Brede Hangeland own goal but Nani's penalty miss let Fulham off the hook and after Hangeland equalised, their boss Mark Hughes said: 'The penalty save gave us the belief we needed to kick on. I was delighted with the quality of the goals we scored.'
