All smiles: David Beckham looked happy at L.A. Galaxy training today, despite the news that he won't play for England again

He is well known for his patriotism and love of football.

So it was no doubt devastating for David Beckham to learn that his services would no longer be required for the English national squad.

But the 35-year-old still managed to muster a smile for the cameras as he returned to training for his L.A. Galaxy football team today after months out of action with an Achilles injury.

The midfielder showed off his tattooed arms as he trained alongside his Galaxy team mates at their Los Angeles practice ground .

And he gave no sign of his disappointment at the news, which came via England coach Fabio Capello.

'I say thank you very much for helping me at the World Cup but probably he is a little bit old,' Capello told ITV in regard to Beckham’s chances of making the national squad.

‘I won't be picking him for any more competitive matches,' added the coach, speaking to the channel before England's friendly match against Hungary.

Still sharp: Becks looked fit as he took part in the team's training exercises

The football coach revealed he had not yet spoken to Beckham directly about the news.

‘David is a fantastic player, he was really important, but we have to see the new players for the future because the age is important for a lot of people, not only for David,' he added.

Beckham travelled to South Africa to be with the England squad for the World Cup which he missed out on after tearing his Achilles tendon in March during an AC Milan match.

‘The focus is the team and repairing my tendon. That’s the biggest thing to me,' he told reporters following the training session.

Relaxed: Becks is hoping to return to match fitness next month

‘It’s about getting back this season as soon as possible, playing the rest of the season and then taking the time to get the rest in and repair my body.'

Beckham's return to training is ahead of schedule and he hopes to be back on the pitch before October.

'A few people are [surprised], but I’m not,' he said. 'I expected to push myself to the limit and I have.'

The news from the England camp means that Beckham is now likely to end his international career with 115 caps, the most number for any outfield player but 10 short of Peter Shilton's overall record.

Despite Beckham's current concentration on sports matters, he still likes the odd celebrity party.

Last weekend, he attended the Teen Choice awards with sons Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, seven, and Cruz, five.

The Beckhams have only just returned to California this month after spending most of the summer at home in England.
