Wayne Rooney in title rescue mission: Manchester United talisman fighting to be fit for Sunderland

Warrior spirit: Rooney is determined to return for United - but at what cost?

Wayne Rooney is aiming to return for Manchester United’s crucial Barclays Premier League clash at Sunderland on Sunday.

United need to win to ensure the title race goes down to the wire and the striker is desperate to play.

His current injury is a strain of the abductor muscle that runs up the front of the top of the leg and around the groin.

Rooney suffered the injury when making a routine pass in training last Thursday and has been told he needs to rest.

He has already made one surprise comeback this season, against Bayern Munich in the Champions League just a week after supposedly being ruled out for three weeks with an ankle problem.

That gamble backfired when Rooney suffered a recurrence of the injury and England fans will hope their talismanic striker does not come back too early again and risk his
place at the World Cup.
