New mother: Coleen Rooney taking baby Kai for a stroll last month

He's tough on the football field, but Wayne Rooney is a big softie when it comes to his family.

The Manchester United player's wife Coleen has revealed how he broke down in tears at the birth of their son Kai in November.

'Wayne just filled up - I think he was in shock about the whole situation,' she tells Hello! magazine.

'I started crying the moment they put him skin-to-skin on me and he looked up and was staring at me,' she adds.

Wayne, 24, slept on the floor as he kept a bedside vigil at the hospital before the birth and held her hand throughout the labour.

And Coleen, 23, says he has taken to fatherhood with ease, although he does avoid getting his hands too dirty.

'He's a natural with the baby,' she says. 'Wayne is so patient and that is especially good. He likes to be involved.

'He doesn't really change the nappies because I'm always around, but he feeds him and he puts him to sleep.

'I think he's looking forward to his little boy starting to run around and start speaking so they can bond even more.'

Coleen says being a mother has also 'come naturally' to her, but admits it has meant quite a change of pace.

'When I used to go on holiday I'd just sit on the sun-lounger and not move, because I love spending time in the sun, but now I'm up and down keeping Kai entertained,' she says.

She took the newborn for his first holiday Barbados, where the couple recently bought a £5million villa.

'It was so different to any holiday I've even had before because you've got someone else to look after.

'Good job I brought my mum and dad with me.'

She also revealed she is in no hurry to regain her pre-pregnancy figure.

'I've still got a bit of a belly - it's getting there, but you can't do it too fast and to be honest I'm not too bothered about it as that's part and parcel of pregnancy,' she said.
