Doting father: Wayne Rooney holds and kisses son Kai before passing him to a friend to watch Manchester United defeat Tottenham Hotspur

He may not have been on the pitch to enjoy his team's 3-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur, but Wayne Rooney certainly enjoyed himself in the player's lounge at Old Trafford.

And there was one special little reason for that, his son Kai.

The Manchester United star, 24, is currently out of action thanks to a groin injury picked up during training on Thursday this week, however it allowed him to dedicate his Saturday afternoon to looking after his six-month-old boy.

And the little tot was wearing his own personalised Man Utd shirt with MY DAD printed across the back.

With a huge smile on his face, the happy father picked up Kai and planted a kiss on his head as he team battled the north London side.

Earlier in the day his wife Coleen was pictured arriving at Old Trafford with their son in a pushchair.

She wore a smart blue summer blouse with a white flower brooch on the left breast, a pair of dark denim jeans and wedge heels.

The WAG, 23, recently revealed that tough guy Wayne cried at Kai's birth in November last year.

She told Hello! magazine: 'Wayne just filled up - I think he was in shock about the whole situation.

'I started crying the moment they put him skin-to-skin on me and he looked up and was staring at me.'

She explained that Wayne slept on the floor as he kept a bedside vigil at the hospital before the birth and held her hand throughout the labour.

And Coleen says he has taken to fatherhood with ease, as can be seen in the photos here, although he does avoid getting his hands too dirty.

Mum's the word: Coleen Rooney is pictured arriving at Old Trafford with baby Kai in a pushchair

'He's a natural with the baby,' she says. 'Wayne is so patient and that is especially good. He likes to be involved.

'He doesn't really change the nappies because I'm always around, but he feeds him and he puts him to sleep.

'I think he's looking forward to his little boy starting to run around and start speaking so they can bond even more.'

It is almost certain that Wayne Rooney will soon be fit enough to join the England squad for their World Cup campaign in South Africa this summer.

Their opening is against the USA team on June 12.
