Leader: Germany's Martin Kaymer hits his tee shot on the fifth hole

Classy German Martin Kaymer claimed the US PGA Championship after a truly memorable final day's play at Whistling Straits.

The 25-year-old from Dusseldorf, who has long looked a superstar in the making, outlasted American Bubba Watson in a three hole play-off to win.

A truly spectacular finale saw young Europe take on young America in the battle for the season's final major. Four players in their twenties, two from each continent, all came to the last hole of regulation play with their chance of glory.

From Ulster, Rory McIlroy needed to birdie the treacherous 18th to make the play-off.

Seeking to become the youngest winner of this event for 79 years, he struck a typically gutsy approach to 15ft but the putt slipped past the left edge of the hole.

If that was disappointing for McIlroy, it was nothing compared to the cruel fate that befell Dustin Johnson.

In contention: America's Bubba Watson hit form to close on the leaders

Needing to par the last to win, he looked to have fallen back into the play-off when he tapped in for bogey, only to be given a heartbreaking two shot penalty once he entered the scoring area.

After missing the fairway with his drive Johnson had finished in what was deemed a bunker. It certainly didn't look like one, and the consequent two shot penalty for grounding his club was quite rightly greeted with derision by the crowd.

Anxious wait: Rory McIlroy watches his approach shot on the second hole

Watson began the play-off with a birdie but Kaymer made a wonderful two at the 17th before taking the title when the big hitting left-hander made a mess of the last.

As for McIlroy, he said:'Obviously it was not the result I wanted but there are so many positives I can take out of this going into the majors next year.'
