Peter Crouch fired Tottenham into the lucrative group stage of the Champions League before declaring: ‘Bring on Real Madrid and Inter Milan.’

The striker’s hat-trick helped Spurs trounce Young Boys and earn a £30million payday.

He said: ‘This is massive, we played extremely well and we deserved the bonus of Champions League football. We want massive games. We want Real Madrid and Inter. You don’t know how good you are until you play against the best.’

Jermain Defoe, who scored a controversial second after handling the ball, said: ‘All the hard work we put in last season has paid off now. This means the world to us.’

Manager Harry Redknapp added: ‘It was important we didn’t waste this opportunity. We had a difficult game in Switzerland but we finished the job off.’

'It is a good night for Tottenham - as a kid I used to come training here and watched the games with Benfica in those great days, and at that time it was amazing to see European football and the way this place was jumping.

Much to ponder: Harry Redknapp must now prepare his team for clashes against the very best

'To bring it back tonight was great for the fans - and that is what it is all about really, the supporters, we have given them something to look forwards to in the Champions League.'

The Spurs boss, however, stressed: 'We have got Wigan here on Saturday and it is important we continue to pick up points in the Premier League.'

Young Boys coach Vladimir Petkovic admitted his side were outmuscled by the Premier League tonight.

'We paid for the fact that Spurs had a physical advantage over us, won every header, and their second goal just broke us,' he said. 'After that, Spurs played (with) more fluency, confidence and created chances.'
