Lucky escape: Manchester United midfielder Anderson

Manchester United midfielder Anderson was involved in a car crash in Portugal on Sunday and had to be pulled from the vehicle before it burst into flames.

The Brazilian was believed to be travelling with two friends, a man and a woman, when the accident occurred in the Geres area of Braga in the early hours of the morning.

The Audi R8 sports car, with Anderson’s male friend at the wheel, slid off the road and hit a wall before flying 100 feet through the air and landing in a field.
Anderson’s ‘lifeless’ body was said to have been dragged unconscious from the burning wreckage before it exploded, with witnesses reporting the player saying he owed them his life.

The 22-year-old had reportedly spent the evening at the Sardinha Biba nightclub before leaving in the French-registered £100,000 Audi that has a top speed of 197mph.

All three were taken to St Mark’s Hospital in Braga but were discharged after being treated for concussion, whiplash and shock.

Sources in Portugal said the former Porto player, who joined United for £18million in 2007, would return to Manchester to continue his rehabilitation from a knee injury.

Anderson, whose full name is Anderson Luis di Abreu Oliveira, suffered a cruciate ligament injury to his left knee in February, ruling him out of the World Cup.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been told of the player’s accident but the club were unavailable for comment last night.
