Easy does it: Jack Rodwell, left, celebrates after scoring against Huddersfield

Jack Rodwell provided the creative force for Everton as they barged League One Huddersfield out of the Carling Cup.

Rodwell starred in the centre of midfield, scoring one to give Everton a 2-0 lead and putting Jermaine Beckford's first goal for the club on a plate, which made it 3-1 five minutes into the second half.

Marouane Fellaini and Rodwell appeared to have settled the contest inside the opening quarter of an hour with some clinical finishing to make it 2-0.

Life was breathed back into the tie five minutes before the break when Johnny Heitinga headed into his own net.

But Beckford scored his penalty after Steven Pienaar had been fouled. Heitinga then failed to repeat the trick, missing from the spot after Lee Peltier's 70th-minute dismissal.

Peltier earned a second yellow after a challenge on Seamus Coleman. 'It ended as a contest when we were reduced to 10 men,' conceded Huddersfield boss Lee Clark.

With an extra man, Everton carved out chances at will and Louis Saha stroked in from the edge of the area seconds after entering the action.

Leon Osman then registered a rare header five minutes from time. 'There are selection dilemmas all over the pitch for us now,' beamed Everton assistant manager Steve Round
