John Terry: I was scared - Chelsea defender says he feared KO after foot injury

No worries: Terry after Thursday's training session

John Terry admits there was a horrible moment when he feared his dreams of leading Chelsea to a League and Cup Double before jetting off to the World Cup finals with England had been shattered.

He twisted his right foot in a training-ground tangle on Wednesday and was whisked away for a scan, wearing a protective boot.

Thankfully the scan showed no damage, he was able to train normally yesterday and will be fit to lead out the Barclays Premier League champions in the FA Cup final at Wembley tomorrow.
'It was all sorted out in a couple of hours but I was a bit scared, I must say,' said Terry. 'I was just running back to goal and Daniel Sturridge fell on top of me. My foot was caught underneath. I thought it was quite bad initially.

'I came straight in to see the doc and he sent me for a scan straight away. He couldn't tell what it was. So I was delighted when I got the scan results and there was no ligament damage or anything like that. It was just a bit of bruising inside the foot. No problem at all.

'Once I had the scan results I didn't wear the boot. It was just for protection really. The doc advised to keep it on but after the scan it was back into my trainers.'

Terry was running freely and striking the ball cleanly without pain yesterday, but manager Carlo Ancelotti does have another injury concern over one of his first-choice back four, with Branislav Ivanovic struggling with a knee injury.

Ivanovic has been brilliantly consistent this season both at centre half and at right back and Paulo Ferreira is standing by to step in against Portsmouth at Wembley if the Serbia defender does not make it.

Boost: Terry will be able to take his place at the heart of Chelsea's defence

'John Terry trained well with no problem, he is ready to start and our only problem is Ivanovic,' said Ancelotti, who will be missing longterm casualties Michael Essien, John Mikel Obi and Jose Bosingwa.

Chelsea are the holders of the Premier League title and the FA Cup, whi ch they won by beating Everton at Wembley last year, but captain Terry has made no secret of his desire to complete the club's first Double tomorrow.

'It has never been done before and we have a great chance to go down in the club's history,' said the skipper. 'Me being captain as well, I'd take a lot of pride in that. It will be a special day if we do. Right up there at the very top of my achievements.'

It will not erase memories of his missed penalty in the Champions League final against Manchester United two years ago - 'Nothing will ever make up for Moscow unless we go and win it in my lifetime,' he said - but it will reward a difficult campaign and provide the perfect boost for the World Cup finals in South Africa.

'We've worked so hard this season,' Terry added. 'It's been a tough ride along the way but we came through strong in the league together and that's what we have to do for one more game, but I feel as though it's going to be a really tough game.

Beware: Carlo Ancelotti has urged his players not to underestimate Portsmouth

'Portsmouth may have been relegated but nobody here is taking the game lightly. They've had a few good results towards the end of the season. They will have great support there as always.

'The FA Cup final is a big occasion in itself. As an Englishman, games don't come much bigger. But with us winning the league there's a bit more hype.'

'You can help people go to work happy on Monday. That's a responsibility we have.'

Ancelotti admits he knew very little about the tradition of the FA Cup until he arrived in London last year but soon learned of its reputation for romancing the underdogs and embarrassing the favourites.

'I know it is the oldest competition in this country and I know there have been a lot of surprises,' said the Chelsea manager. 'I know a lot of little teams have played important games. Leeds beat Manchester United, Liverpool lost to Reading.

'Because of this we have to pay attention. On paper we have more possibilities to win. For us it is a great opportunity to win the Double for the first time and we can do this.

'But we have to respect Portsmouth. They are relegated but they beat Tottenham and they played very well. They deserve to play in this game.' m.barlow
