Ashley Cole ended a traumatic season by becoming the most successful player in FA Cup history as Chelsea completed the Double.

The 1-0 victory against Portsmouth at Wembley yesterday made the defender the first player to lift the trophy six times in more than 120 years of Cup competition.

Cole has been through a torrid time off the pitch this season with the break-up of his marriage to pop star Cheryl Cole after a series of sordid allegations were made against him.

He was also sidelined with a broken ankle as Chelsea battled towards the Premier League title, but the former Arsenal Cup-winner is only looking forward now.

'His record in the Cup is incredible and he has been unbelievable this year,' said Chelsea captain John Terry. 'Ashley was unfortunate with his injury and was probably our best player before that. He has come back as fit as ever and raring to go, which is a massive boost for us and England.'

Cole has played in seven Cup finals with Chelsea and Arsenal and has overtaken the three men who won the trophy five times in the 19th century - Charles Wollaston (The Wanderers), Arthur Kinnaird (The Wanderers/Old Etonians) and James Forrest (Blackburn).

But he was not the only record-setter, as Didier Drogba became only the second player after Ian Rush to have scored in three different Cup finals.

'It's fantastic that we've achieved the Double,' said Drogba, who took his season's tally to 37 and has scored in all six games he has played at Wembley for Chelsea.

'It was difficult to come back and maintain focus against Portsmouth because winning the title last week was great.

'But I didn't wonder if we were going to score. If you create all those chances in the first half, you believe in the second the chances will still come and you don't get frustrated.'
