Rivals: Legitimate traders like these are suffering because others have taken to selling fake goods on the street

Fake World Cup souvenirs are costing FIFA’s official suppliers millions in lost sales, according to an anti-counterfeit organisation.

Fake shirts, flags and other souvenirs are available on South Africa’s streets — often sold at traffic lights.

South Africans have been encouraged to buy national team shirts to wear on ‘Football Fridays’ but many complain about the high cost of adidas jerseys. Cheap copies sold by hawkers are popular.

Meanwhile FIFA have announced that a final batch of 164,000 World Cup tickets will go on sale this Friday, two weeks before the start of the tournament.

More than 95 per cent of the 2.88million tickets have been sold, with the final drive expected to almost sell out most games across South Africa’s 10 venues.
