Fresh shame for John Terry as his unemployed father admits selling cocaine in wine bar

Edward Terry leaves court today after admitting selling cocaine for £160

Disgraced footballer John Terry faced further shame today when his unemployed father pleaded guilty to supplying cocaine to an undercover newspaper reporter.

Edward Terry, 56, appeared before Basildon Magistrates' Court where he admitted supplying 3.5g (0.1oz) of the class A drug in November last year.

The court was told the father of the Chelsea and England player supplied the drug to the reporter in a wine bar.

A judge is due to sentence Terry, of Chafford Hundred, Essex, on June 1 - less than two weeks before England's first game of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa - at Basildon Crown Court.

Magistrates were told that Terry had been paid £160.

Prosecutor Ricky Khagram said Terry met Dan Sanderson - who was posing as a chauffeur - at the wine bar near his home and offered to supply the drug.

Terry's solicitor Neil Saunders said his client had been 'targeted' by the newspaper because he was John Terry's father.

Mr Saunders told the court in mitigation that Terry was 'embarrassed' for the upset he had caused to his son.

'(He) was targeted by the News Of The World,' Mr Saunders told the court. 'They spent seven weeks, four nights a week, trying to find out something about him to use on the front page.'

Mr Saunders said Terry had been out with friends and had drunk a 'considerable amount'.

He added: 'Of course he is embarrassed for the upset he has caused to his son - and that is the reason he was targeted.'

Presiding magistrate John Toplis said the case was 'unusual' and ruled that a Crown Court judge should pass sentence.

Terry, who was released on bail, left court without comment and spoke only to confirm his personal details and enter a guilty plea during the hearing.

Earlier this year, his son was stripped of the England captaincy after his affair with lingerie model Vanessa Perroncel was exposed.

She is the ex-girlfriend of his former Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge. As a result, Bridge chose to step down from the England squad.

When news of the sex scandal broke the Mail learned Terry's representatives were 'touting' his executive Wembley Stadium box for £4,000 in cash.

The latest controversy for the Terry family comes a year after his mother Sue, 51 , and mother-in-law Sue Poole, 55, were cautioned for shoplifting.

Terry himself was arrested in 2003 following a fracas in a club.

He is expected to be part of the England squad heading for the World Cup in South Africa next month.

However there were fears yesterday that the 29-year-old had fractured a metatarsal bone in his right foot.

This would also have meant him missing Saturday's FA Cup final.

But a scan has shown that the bone is in fact not broken and he may be back at training this morning.

Terry said yesterday: 'I took a slight knock in training but with such an important match on Saturday the right course of action was to put a protective boot on my right foot and have a CT scan.

'The scan has shown there is no break and I am hoping to train today if not Friday and of course play in the FA Cup final on Saturday.'
