US OPEN 2010: Kim Clijsters battles past Venus Williams and into her second successive final

Sneaking in: Kim Clijsters came from a set down to beat Venus Williams in the semi-final

Kim Clijsters, poster girl for marriage and motherhood on the women's tour, stayed on course for a repeat US Open title on Friday night after seeing off the game challenge of the near veteran Venus Williams.

Despite her nerve briefly wobbling after gaining the lead in the deciding set, the 27-year-old Belgian steadied herself sufficiently to win 4-6 7-6 6-4 against the 30 year-old American.

Flushed out: Venus Williams was roared on by home support but to no avail

Clijsters faces world number eight Vera Zvonareva in Saturday's final after benefitting from Williams' mental gyration in the tiebreak, when he she made two early double faults and missed a simple smash.

But for much of the match Williams's play belied what has become a relatively modest record in each Grand Slam outside her favourite hunting ground of Wimbledon.

Since the Australian Open in 2003 she had reached only one Major semi-final beyond the gates of the All England Club, although she played impressively here before falling short against the superb mobility and piercing groundstrokes of Clijsters.
