Open plan living: French footballer Thierry Henry has bough a stunning three-storey apartment in the heart of New York's hip Soho district


This is the amazing penthouse football superstar Thierry Henry has snapped up in the Big Apple.

The French footballer, 33, who just started playing for the New York Red Bulls, shelled out an initial $9million for the top two floors of the beautiful building in hip Soho.

And he has also paid $5.85 million for the apartment in the floor below his penthouse - planning to combine it once the current owner moves out.

The stunning 5,607 sq ft apartment - along with another 4,500 sq ft of outdoor space, including a bamboo garden - is in the Nolita neighbourhood and located on the same New York block where Heath Ledger died in 2008 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

It is an area favoured by the stars, with Alicia Keys having an apartment close by and Lenny Kravitz, Courtney Love and Nicole Kidman having all lived on the same block.

City documents show it has 17ft floor-to-ceiling windows, an open chef's kitchen, a media room with wet bar, 72" built-in flat screen with surround sound and stereo.

The master bedroom has two separate his and hers dressing rooms with their own 'rain' showers - perfect for the sportsman and his new Bosnian model girlfriend, Andrea Rajačić.

The stunning 5,607 sq ft apartment - along with another 4,500 sq ft of outdoor space, Henry had spent months looking at apartments after moving to New York, favouring hip downtown neighbourhoods including Soho, Tribeca and his new home area of Nolita.

'Henry was the first person who saw it,' said broker Ivan Prochko. 'He viewed it three times in two days. After that, we had an accepted offer.'

He said the tenant in the remaining floor's move out date 'is expected soon' allowing the football ace to extend his already amazing home.

The top floor has 17-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, while the middle floor includes a patio that wraps around two bedrooms. The bottom floor includes two bedrooms and a kitchenette.

'It's a pretty amazing apartment with great views and lots of light,' says Raphael DeNiro, a Prudential Douglas Elliman broker who showed the apartment to other clients.

Henry has says he always wanted to live in New York since first visiting the Big Apple as a wide-eyed 19-year-old.

'It was an extraordinary trip,' he said recently, recalling the view of skyscrapers and getting to enjoy the parks.

'Every time I've had a chance to, I've always come back.'
