Plea: Wayne Rooney is begging wife Coleen to stay with him for the sake of their son Kai

Manchester United striker is not in the team for today's match against his former club Everton

He spent 90 minutes with Kai yesterday and is determined to save his marriage

Wayne Rooney has finally seen his son after a week apart following allegations he slept with two prostitutes while wife Coleen was pregnant last year.

And today he is not in the team for Manchester United's game against his former team Everton.

Just before kick-off, Rooney's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, said he left the player out to spare him the abuse he usually receives at Goodison Park.

"We made a decision simply because he gets terrible abuse here. We don't want to subject him to that," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

Yesterday, the striker was permitted 90 minutes with 10-month-old Kai yesterday, who was delivered to him by his wife's two brothers Anthony and Joe.

Now, after reports claiming Rooney had no plans to fight for his marriage, it was claimed today seeing his son has made him realise how much he has to lose if he doesn't gain Coleen's forgiveness.

A source close to the footballer said to The Sun: 'Wayne was so pleased to see his little lad again, he dotes on him like any father would but it tore him apart when he had to give him back.'

The shamed England star has been estranged from his family since prostitute Jenny Thompson sold her story last week.

And he is begging Coleen to think of their son before walking away from their marriage.

'Kai is Wayne's lifeline and he is pleading with her to stay together for the sake of their child,' a friend said to the Daily Mirror.

'Whatever has happened Wayne was desperate to see Kai. This is the very first step. This is going to take days if not weeks. You do not decide the fate of a marriage in a few minutes.'

They added: 'I am sure they are going to meet in the near future but Coleen has so many things on her mind. I don't think Coleen has come to any definitive decision as yet.'

This is indeed a testing time for the 24-year-old presenter.

In addition to the revelations about her husband's alleged adultery, the star's younger sister Rosie is critically ill after suffering a stroke.

And, being there for the 12-year-old is now her main priority.

'Coleen was prepared to finally meet Wayne and listen to what he had to say,' a source told The Sun. 'But when she took a call about Rosie, she knew instantly she had to be at her bedside.'

Although the couple issued a joint statement last night, a source at Manchester United has described their marriage on a 'knife edge' and said this is not an indication their marriage can be saved.

'At the moment, it does not look like she will take him back and they could be heading for the divorce courts,' they said to the Daily Mirror. 'Wayne is desperate to avoid that but it may be too late.'

A friend of Coleen's said she is 'fed up' with Rooney's excuses and 'has more self-respect' than to take him back.

'Obviously with Kai the decision is not as easy as all that, and Coleen knows she has to try and work something out with Wayne,' they said.

Priority: Coleen's younger sister Rosie is critically ill and spending time with her taking precedence over talking to Rooney

The past week has no doubt been unbearable for the 24-year-old, who faced the wrath of Sir Ferguson after allegations of his infidelity were made public.

According to the Manchester United source 'Fergie hit the roof'.

'He has told him to sort his life out and strongly urged him to get his marriage back on track,' they said.

'Wayne was told he could have time off if he needed it, he will be given compassionate leave even if it means missing matches.'

They added: 'The full impact of what he has done is hitting home.'
