Less than impressed: Jenson and girlfriend Jessica Michibata look miserable after his disappointing performance

What a difference a day makes.

Just 24 hours ago racing champion Jenson Button was pictured looking happy and smiling with model girlfriend Jessica Michibata after coming fourth in a practice session for the Grand Prix in Malaysia.

But when it counted in the qualifier today he could only manage 17th position, leaving a miserable team and an unhappy girlfriend in his wake

Button and girlfriend Jessica have been giving Lewis Hamilton and Nicole Scherzinger a run for their money as the golden couple of racing, particularly after Button won the Australian Grand Prix last week.

But today as torrential rain drenched the track, Jenson's team made the bad decision to delay going out, hoping the deluge would subside.

Unfortunately for them the rain continued leaving Button trailing in 17th place on the grid for the race tomorrow and his girlfriend less inclined to smile for the photographers.

Waiting it out: Jenson Button and his team realised they made the wrong decision delaying their start

The motoring star summed up his performance saying: 'It is very disappointing but I can't really do much about it now.

'We thought the first rain cloud would be it. We did not want to risk going out early so we waited in the garage, which was obviously the wrong thing to do now in hindsight, but it was the risk we took.'

Mistake: In the end Button was forced to race on the wet track as the downpour worsened

At one point in the second qualifier Button even aquaplaned off the course, getting stuck in the gravel.

He said: 'I just hope I haven't damaged anything on the car because I was sat in the gravel with the engine running for some time, hoping to get pulled out.'

Fall from grace: A disappointed Lewis Hamilton leaves the track after coming 20th in the Grand Prix qualifier

It wasn't just Button that had a bad race, Lewis Hamilton put in an equally poor performance going out in the opening qualifying session.

He will start in 20th place tomorrow, which is a huge disappointment after a positive start yesterday when he took first place in the practice session.

All smiles: Jenson and Jessica enjoyed a stroll in the sunshine yesterday

The mood in the McLaren camp will be a lot more sombre today as Hamilton and Button plan how to reduce their disadvantage for tomorrow's race.

Unless the rain holds of and they manage to finish ahead of Ferrari, you can expect more miserable pictures to come.
