John Terry has texted James Milner to explain there was no intent behind the Wembley tackle which angered Martin O'Neill, but he stopped short of an apology.

Terry believes he won the ball fairly, nudging it aside with the outside of his boot before his momentum carried him into Milner's leg during the FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Villa manager O'Neill branded it 'horrendous' and said Terry should have been sent off and not just booked.

But Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said: 'John tried to speak with Milner after the game on Saturday. He went to the dressing room but it was locked.

'For him, I don't think it was a problem to say sorry. It was a tackle that can happen.

'I think the yellow card was right.

'The rules say that, if you have intention to touch the ball, it's not a red card.

'I saw the tackle again on the television and John touched the ball before making contact with Milner.

'I know that John texted Milner and, for Milner, it was OK.'
