Fitter than ever: Tom Cruise shows off his incredibly muscly arms on the set of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol in Vancouver, Canada

He might be 48 years old, but Tom Cruise appears to be in the best shape of his life.

The actor showed off his incredibly muscular arms in a white tank top on the set of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol in Vancouver, Canada, yesterday.

Cruise will reprise his role as secret agent Ethan Hunt in the new film, which is being filmed 14 years after the original Mission: Impossible film in 1996.

Top Guns: Cruise looks in better shape than ever at the age of 48

The actor is known for his love of action-filled movies and famously performs the majority of his own stunts.

And Cruise admitted it is through these stunts, which he also showed off in recent movie Knight And Day, that he manages to stay in such good shape.

He said: 'When you're doing a film like Knight And Day, you train through stunts. You learn what you have to do.

Staying buff: Cruise credits his love of performing his own stunts for helping him stay in shape

Wrapping up warm: Cruise later switched to a warm jacket in between takes

'And in movies, you have to be just as fresh in the 14th hour as when you got there because you just need that energy to perform and it's something I live with.

'In my life, I love sports, a lot of different sports - hiking and climbing. That's the stuff I do for the films but also with the kids, they are activities you can do together.'

Stunts for the upcoming action film, due for release in America in December 2011, include Cruise scaling the tallest building in the world, Dubai's Burj Khalifa, for a chase around the skyscraper.

Talking recently about performing his own stunts, Cruise said he always wants to do as much as he can because he wants his audience to believe his character as much as possible.

Co-star: Simon Pegg was also spotted on the set of the film in Canada

Love interest: Paula Patton wrapped up in a long black coat and boots

He explained: 'I want to entertain the audience and part of making these movies is doing my own stunts.

'I love having the camera right there in front of me, where you can see me holding a shot all the way through.

'I think it adds to the excitement for an audience. It's something that is challenging to do and fun for me.'

Mission: Impossible II is one of the top 100 most successful films of all time in the U.S. and has made over $215million at the box office to date.

She had also ensured Suri was ready for bed when they got home, as the four-year-old tot was decked out in a cute all-in-one pyjama set.
