Down trade: David Arquette had sex with waitress Jasmine Waltz, right, while separated from Courteney Cox
Why do they do it? Is it the uniform? Does the apron remind them of their mothers? Is it the fact these women bring them food, and drink, and wipe up after them? Is a pencil behind the ear simply irresistible — or could it be the short skirts?
Whatever the unique allure of the waitress, yet another married man has succumbed to her minimum-wage-fuelled charms.
David Arquette, 39, a stocky, short, sandy-haired, whiny voiced, moustachioed, C-list actor, admitted on a radio show this week that he had indeed had sex — ‘once . . . maybe twice’ — with a waitress called Jasmine Waltz.
What a merry dance he has been leading his wife, Courteney Cox, 46, and their six-year-old daughter, Coco. The couple have now separated after 11 years of marriage.
David Arquette is only the latest in a long line of men to have fallen for women who are known in LA as ‘low-hanging fruit’: they hang, pendulous, ripe and inviting, just waiting to drop into the paw of a man who has made no effort whatsoever to snag her.
Jude Law, Tiger Woods, George Clooney and Cristiano Ronaldo have all dated, for want of a better word, women who wait tables for a living. Ironically, Courteney’s old co-star, David Schwimmer, has just married a woman he met when she was working as a cocktail waitress.
Not that there is anything wrong with this profession, it is just that this intermingling of very different DNA is indicative of a wider social trend, of a malaise among men both famous and not so famous.
Generally, they like to ‘marry up’ — socially, in physical terms, even financially — but they like to ‘cheat down’. And it seems the more fabulous the wife, the more compelled the man will feel to really rub her nose in it.
David Arquette was dazzled by Courteney Cox when he met her on the set of the first Scream movie: she was already famous, and fabulously wealthy. While he looks as though he grew up on a diet of nachos, every pore of this woman oozes health and vitality. I had dinner with Courteney Cox once in LA, and a year later shot a magazine cover with her, and the woman is both funny and well read.
Like her character, Monica, in Friends, she is a perfectionist and, according to friend Jennifer Aniston, loyal and a great cook. She is an American size six, has a perfectly symmetrical face and, well, I could list her attributes until the cows come home. But the bald fact is, the more fabulous the wife, the more likely the husband is to cheat on her with someone more used to serving cups of coffee.

A male friend told me he had been discussing the Tiger Woods affairs over dinner, and a woman had exclaimed incredulously that: ‘You don’t get more perfect than his wife. If it can happen to her, it can happen to anyone.’
Here’s the thing: his wife was too good, too nice. That can be a little boring, a little intimidating.
Of course, men will always come up with a lame excuse when they dabble with the bar staff. In Arquette’s case, it was because he had not had sex with his wife for several months.
She is seven years older than he is, and had reportedly grown tired of acting ‘like his mother’; this is a role men will manipulate you into with their sheer hopelessness — ‘Where are my trainers?’ ‘What airport are we flying from?’ ‘Have you packed my Pokemon?’ — then resent you for. It’s a recipe for disaster.
The reasons men ‘cheat down’ are manifold, but a lot of it boils down to control. David Arquette wasn’t in the metaphorical driving seat in his marriage, as is often the case when the woman is the higher earner.
Men like to be looked up to. ‘I had a fling, and it made me feel manly,’ David Arquette mewed all too tellingly live on the radio.
Given the fragility of their egos, why do these men with enormous chips on their not terribly wide shoulders ‘marry up’ in the first place? It’s laziness. They feel flattered that a fabulous, accomplished, intelligent woman should choose them. They tell their mates. They boast. They bask.

But then these men get tired of it always being the woman’s name that is shouted out on the red carpet. Perhaps that’s why they want to feel ‘manly’ by going to bed with a woman who is poorer than them, and probably grateful to be sleeping with a star — even if he is married.
The women these men cheat with are never as funny, or as clever, or as well dressed as their wives. But they are more compliant, and that’s the key. They coo and they simper.
The truth is that men are often uncomfortable around women who are clever or rich of successful.
Accomplished women often resort to dumbing themselves down in order not to scare off a new mate. I vowed I would never do it again, all that: ‘Oh, aren’t you clever to be able to read a map and remember a pin number. Of course, the fact you still live with your mum isn’t strange, why should it be?’
The newly separated Courteney Cox has just been offered £600,000 to be the face of a new dating web site, Cougarlife, for women who like toyboys. My advice? Stick to your caste, Courteney. You need a man who is your equal in every way.
