That's not team spirit: Wayne Rooney, pictured here arriving at Heathrow yesterday, has been branded a chav by his Manchester United team mate

Wayne Rooney has been called a lot of names in his time, but it's unlikely he expected a rather brutal personal insult to be levelled at him by his own team mate.

Federico Macheda, a fellow striker who plays with Manchester United, has labelling him a chav while on international duty.

The promising Italian lauded his Old Trafford team-mate for his skills and advice, but indiscreetly described him a 'coatto' in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

The term means working class and vulgar, with the closest colloquial translation being 'chav'.

Rooney he might have expected more solidarity from a player taken under the England striker's wing at Old Trafford.

'Rooney is a really great person, he always gives me advice. But, as we say in Rome, he's a bit of a coatto.'

The 19-year-old is with the Italy Under 21 side ahead of a double header against Romania.

Rooney is set to meet up with the England squad ahead coming days ahead of their match against Montenegro at Wembley next Tuesday.

He is fresh from a trip to Prague, where he has been enjoying a second holiday with his wife Coleen.

The footballer and his WAG, who have a 11-month-old son Kai, are attempting to patch up their marriage following cheating allegations.

The £100,000-a-week star became embroiled in a tawdry scandal last month after prostitute Jennifer Thompson claimed she had enjoyed three-in-a-bed sex sessions with Rooney while his wife Coleen was five months pregnant.
